Leafy, green vegetables are power packed with nutritional components your body requires on a daily basis for maintaining optimum health. However, being able to sit down to a fresh salad every day may not be possible for everyone, whether it is because of your time and schedule or because the season is over for getting fresh garden greens. Getting the level of nutrients you need every day from greens is important and is easier when you can simply add a freshly ground supplement powder to other foods.

If you are considering making your own green supplement powder, investing in a high quality food dehydrator, a coffee or spice grinder, and a blender is important. You will use a dehydrator for drying out the greens and the blender for helping to crush them up after they are dehydrated. However, a blender alone will not produce the final results you will need for your powder to be readily mixable. Dried, blended greens will need to be placed in a grinder for the results to be a fine, easy-to-mix supplement powder. Bear in mind you will be mixing this powder into other foods, so you want it to have the finest mixing consistency possible.

When greens like collards and turnip greens are in season, usually in the late summer and fall, you can find them in abundance at your local grocer. Taking advantage of this season is a good idea. Greens like kale, all varieties of lettuce and leaves from carrots and beets are also great choices for making your own supplement powder. Getting together enough greens is your first step to making enough green powder for you to use all year long. Two bushel baskets are about enough greens to fill a quart jar once everything is dried and ground up.

If you have your own garden, you can harvest greens for dehydrating and grinding your powder as they mature. However, while pulling greens, do not forget about some of the weeds. Many people may be surprised to know that some weeds like dandelions and nettles are packed with vitamins and minerals. In fact, nettles are extremely high in nutritional content, making them a perfect addition for your green powder supplement.
