Have you ever wondered how they make perfume, or what exactly makes it smell the way it does? While each perfume company has different compositions, there are similarities. Unfortunately, many of the ingredients aren’t good for you, and honestly might surprise you. Studies have found that many of these recipes found in the majority of mainstream perfume concoctions are primarily made from a combination of synthetic ingredients and chemicals that are all protected by the manufacturer’s individual copyright – and are very toxic.

Wait… Toxic?

What’s really concerning is that the chemicals that are being used in perfumes do more than just stink and make you feel queasy – some of the most used chemicals are the most toxic in many cosmetics. They have been linked to all sorts of health problems; like hormonal disruptions, different skin irritations, asthma, allergies, and even linked to the spread and formation of cancerous tumors. In fact, these chemicals, called phthalates (or diethyl phthalate [DEP]), have been banned in the European Union (which included personal care products in their ban). However, here in the United States there’s really no regulation on these chemicals because companies use loose terms “fragrance” or “parfum” to avoid disclosing specific ingredients. You have to be very cautious about what you put on your skin, and aware of the FDA loopholes that allow fragrance ingredients under blanket terms. One of the direct problems with this is that even some very high quality, all-natural fragrances use these blanket terms to protect their recipes from being stolen. Generally, if you’re worried about a product you can ask about the ingredients and a quality fragrance company should disclose their information.

Considering the natural and delicate ingredients in natural fragrance perfumes, it is harder for them to have the same strength as fake, synthetic chemicals. However, the market has made great strides in recent years, and some designs smell delicious. Get ready to toss out your toxic perfume for a healthier alternative!
